In the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), the B. subtilis strain was used to evaluate TPH removal efficiency and degradation kinetics in a tropical agricultural soil. A one-factor experimental design with five treatments was established: soil + 1% sand + no air; soil + 1% sand + air; soil + 1% sand + vermicompost + air; soil + 1% sand + vermicompost + no air; and natural attenuation. The highest TPH degradation was 86 ± 1.25% in the treatment consisting of soil + 1% sand + vermicompost + aeration. This treatment produced 167 ± 3 mg of CO2, had a pH of 7.5, and a TPH degradation rate of 0.031 day⁻¹. The hydrocarbon degradation kinetics were first order (R² > 0.88). In this work, B. subtilis was stimulated by the nutrients in the vermicompost, which led to bioaugmentation that favored the degradation of TPH in an agricultural soil with a silty-loam texture
