Abstract

The historical collapse of key infrastructure, such as the Yanango bridge in Chanchamayo (Peru), exposes a critical vulnerability in watershed management: the lack of predictive models that quantify the hydrological response and sediment production during extreme events. This study addresses this limitation by modeling the Yanango watershed for various return periods (TR) using HEC-HMS.A semi-distributed hydrological model (12 sub-basins) was implemented, integrating the SCS-CN (losses), SCS Unit Hydrograph (transform), and Muskingum-Cunge (routing) methods, coupled with RUSLE factors for sediment computation. The model was calibrated by adjusting CN values to replicate the reference discharge (202.35 m3/s) for a 200-year TR, as established by the MTC (2013). Final results indicate severe sediment production, reaching 213.6 tn/ha/year at the outlet (Reach G) for the same return period. It is concluded that the HEC-HMS model is a robust tool for risk forecasting in the watershed and that the basin's infrastructure, especially that located downstream, is exposed to a critical risk of siltation.
