Abstract

Introduction: Needles are the primary instrument used in any acupuncture technique, making the study of their thermal behavior is essential to determine whether this phenomenon could influence the results of a typical treatment which excludes moxibustion and fire needle. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the temperature gradient of the needle outside the patient as a function of its insertion depth during conventional acupuncture treatments. Method: A needle was inserted into a polystyrene container to a depth of 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm. For each depth, the temperature on the needle was immediately measured at 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm distances. The influence of the needle insertion depth on the temperature change of the section of the needle outside the patient was analyzed. Results: The thermal gradient along the needle was determined from 0 to 20 mm away from the phantom. Conclusions: In conventional acupuncture treatment, the thermal gradient of the needle outside the patient being treated with acupuncture does not depend on the insertion depth of the needle into the patient.
