The role of the nurse in the prevention of measles in adolescents: a perspective from clinical practice

Measles, a vaccine-preventable disease, continues to pose a public health challenge due to declining immunization rates, misinformation, and population mobility. In this context, the nurse's role in measles prevention among adolescents is crucial, as this group may have incomplete vaccination schedules or be unaware of their immune status. In clinical practice, nurses participate in the safe administration of the MMR vaccine, in addition to performing functions related to health education, epidemiological surveillance, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Through contact with adolescents, families, and educational communities, nurses identify risk factors, detect signs and symptoms early, and implement primary prevention strategies in high schools. They also strengthen trust in immunization programs through effective communication, active listening, and addressing myths related to vaccination. The methodology of this study consisted of a literature review in PubMed, Dialnet, and Google Scholar, using articles published between 2021 and 2026. The results demonstrated that evidence-based clinical practice allows for the design of interventions aimed at improving adherence to the vaccination schedule and reducing outbreaks in school and community settings. In conclusion, the nurse's role extends beyond administering vaccines, solidifying their position as a leader in health promotion and the development of a preventive culture against measles.
